Saturday, 11/23: Druid Hill Park

Welcome to week two of our new training season! If you missed last Saturday's run, don't worry and jump in this week. As a matter of fact, our training plan is designed such that you can jump in anytime between now and Christmas and you'll be fine!

Meet-up

Let's meet outside the Maryland Zoo, at the parking lot opposite the main entrance. As usual, we start at 8:00 AM.

Route

Like last week, there'll be two slightly different routes for the half and full groups:

Half

  • From the zoo, follow the Jones Falls Trail north.
  • At mile 1, stay right and enter the "Dreaded Druid Hills" (on Poplar Dr).
  • Keep going, always staying to the left and thus along the park's boundaries, until you reach the swimming pool.
  • Proceed to the reservoir and run around it clockwise until hitting Swann Dr.
  • From there, get back on the Jones Falls Trail and follow until you return to the parking lot.

  • From the zoo, follow the Jones Falls Trail north.
  • At mile 1, stay left and follow Parkdale Ave north to Woodberry.
  • Continue through Woodberry along CIipper Park Road, then left on Clipper Road until you resume your trek northwards on the Jones Falls Trail.
  • Exit the Jones Falls trail at it's northern trailhead and continue straight on Springgarden Drive, then right on Greenspring Ave.
  • Enter the Cyburln Arboretum via it's pedestrian footpath, continue to the main visitor center, and use the turnabout to loop back.
  • Return to Druid Hill park. When entering the park, stay left and enter the "Dreaded Druid Hills" (on Poplar Dr).
  • Keep going, always staying to the left and thus along the park's boundaries, until you reach the swimming pool.
  • Proceed to the reservoir and run along it's northern shore to Swann Dr.
  • From there, get back on the Jones Falls Trail and follow until you return to the parking lot.

Tips

  • As of today, Thursday, weather ain't looking so good. Check conditions the night before and dress accordingly.
  • There are restrooms and water just after the swimming pool, when you are about to enter the reservoir.
  • Lisa is hosting post-run breakfast at her place, and it'd be great to see you there after the run.
  • Print out the turn-by-turn directions or a copy of the map in case you're worried you might get lost.
  • Look out for "JF" emblems painted on the ground, they indicate you are standing on the Jones Falls Trail and can help point you in the right direction.
