This weekend, we'll be heading out for our first run outside of the city! Patapsco Valley is my favorite place to run in the Baltimore area. It has an amazing trail network, but this week we'll stick to the paved trails and closed roads to enjoy the scenery without the tripping hazards :) This run is a little hilly - perfect training for the Baltimore Marathon! Don't forget to bring a water bottle. If you feel so inclined, bring a breakfast item to share after the run. I am planning on bringing some cold watermelon!
Meet at 7am under the railroad bridge on Ilchester Road. This is near the intersection of Hilltop Rd and Ilchester. Coordinates: 39.2508,-76.764053
The marathon training route is essentially a hairpin out-and-back around the Patapsco River. We'll run across the first bridge to the paved Grist Mill Trail, and follow it until it ends at Glen Artney Road. Follow Glen Artney for just a fraction of a mile till it ends at Gun Road. Make a right on Gun to cross the Patapsco River, then make another right onto River Road. Follow River Road for almost 3 miles. Where it ends, River Road Trail begins. Follow this trail till it ends at the dam (you can't miss it!) and then turn around and run it all backwards.
For half marathoners, instead of retracing the entire route, cross over the bridge at the end of River Rd/beginning of the River Rd Trail after going out to the dam, for a total of 7.9 miles. Not up for all that distance? Cross the bridge the first time you see it, skipping the section on River Road Trail out to the dam. That will get you about 6.3 miles.
