2/6/2016: Lake Elkhorn & CA Pathways

posted Feb 3, 2016, 7:25 AM by Sarah Ouadah   [ updated Feb 3, 2016, 11:10 AM ]

This week we'll be running a new route on the beautiful pathways of Columbia, MD! Columbia has many miles of interconnecting paved bike paths that are meticulously cared for by the Columbia Association (and are currently clear of snow), however they can be a bit tricky to navigate if you're unfamiliar with the area. You may want to print out a copy of the map to bring with you, or just be sure not to stray too far from the group. Saturday has a high of about 50 degrees, but may start much colder in the morning, so wear layers that you can shed as you heat up.

Remember to sign up for carpooling if you need or can provide a ride. We will have breakfast at my house in Columbia afterward, RSVP here.

Meet Up

We'll be meeting in the Lake Elkhorn parking lot at 8 AM. The drive is about 35-40 minutes, so give yourself enough time to get there. The parking lot is small, but there should be open spots. If not, there are corporate buildings across Broken Land Parkway where we can park.

Route

Half marathoners will step up to 7 miles this week and full marathoners will cut back to 9.5. However, the course is an out-and-back, so you can modify the distance as you wish.

  • Continue up Farbell Row and turn right onto Downdale Place.
  • Continue to Oakland Mills Road and turn left.
  • Almost immediately, make a sharp left turn off of the sidewalk and onto the paved path, following it through a pedestrian tunnel.
  • Continue on this main path towards Tamar Drive, avoiding any connector pathways.
  • At 2.3 mi, cross the Tamar Drive cul-de-sac to continue on the main path towards Old Montgomery Road.
  • At 2.5 mi, cross Old Montgomery Road and continue on the main path towards Rouse Parkway.
  • At 3 mi, continue straight, going through the pedestrian tunnel to cross Rouse Parkway.
  • The turnaround is at the 2nd pathway intersection, about 3.2 miles.
  • Turn around and retrace your steps back to Lake Elkhorn.
  • At Lake Elkhorn, turn right onto the path to continue running counterclockwise around the lake to complete the loop, ending at the parking lot.
