You've made it this far! And as is HMT custom, we're heading down to the C&O Canal for our longest run of the season. It will be 14 miles for the half-marathoners, who will wave politely to mile 13.1 as they blow past it, and a whopping 22 miles for our full-marathoners. To quote Mama Goose, MD, "You WILL hit the wall on this run, meaning you'll reach a phase at which you have depleted all your glycogen stores in liver and muscle, but fat metabolism has not quite yet kicked in. Your body will ask you to stop running. Run through it, it only lasts 10-15 minutes, then you'll feel better."

Our destination is Carderock Recreation Area, Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historic Park, Potomac, MD 20854. See the map below. It's about 50 minutes from Baltimore, so we'll start at 9:00 am.

Here's the route: http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=6209214. It's a simple out-and-back along the towpath. The canal will be on your right (on the way out) and the Potomac River will be on your left. There are mile markers to help you find the turnaround, or you can rely on GPS. Sections of the trail are occasionally closed for maintenance, in which case you'll be rerouted to the other side of the canal. Just follow the signs and keep heading along the canal.

  • It will be warm, about 43 at the start, climbing to 52 by noon. The high for Saturday is 61!??
  • CARRY YOUR OWN WATER. If you are running 22 miles, carry your own food too! I will have GUs if anyone wants a few.
  • Sign up for carpooling. And remember, combustion engines require gasoline. Please compensate your drivers.
  • Celebratory breakfast in Rockville afterwards! Bring a change of clothes if you're interested.
  • Bring snacks to leave in your car for after the run. It's important to start refueling immediately.
Happy running,
