posted Feb 29, 2016, 5:31 AM by Sarah Ouadah   [ updated Mar 4, 2016, 11:26 AM ]

**CHANGE IN PLANS**
Instead of the B&A Trail, this week's run will instead take us through Druid Hill Park and North Baltimore. We'll again start at the John Eager Howard Statue in Mt Vernon, meeting at 8 am. Look for Vitaly, who will be leading tomorrow's run. The route for the half marathoners can be found here, and the route for the full marathoners can be found here.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

This week we're heading south of the city for a run on the B&A Trail. This is an out-and-back paved rail trail going from Glen Burnie to Annapolis that is popular with both runners and cyclists.

Half marathoners are scheduled to run 9 miles and marathoners are scheduled for 17, but run whatever distance you want. If you're running 17 miles, please eat and drink something so we don't have to drag you off the trail! There is a bathroom that the marathoners will pass and a few water fountains, but they may be off for winter.

Sign up for carpooling if you need or can give a ride. For those hungry after the run, we can head over to Irina's Crepes Cafe to try their crepes, waffles, and coffee, but try not to overdo it on the sugar!

Meet Up

We'll meet at 8:00 am at Sawmill Creek Park in Glen Burnie, MD, about a 20 minute drive from Baltimore.

Route

Half marathon:

Directions:
  • From the parking lot, head east on the John Overstreet Connector for ~0.4 miles.
  • Turn right onto the B&A Trail and follow it south. There are no turns or trail intersections so you can't get lost!
  • The turn around is at 4.5 miles, right before the intersection of Elvaton Road with Jumpers Hole Road. The distance is marked every 1/4 mile, but we'll be starting at the end (13 and change) and thus see decreasing distance on the way out.
  • Head back to the start exactly the way you came!
Marathon:

Directions:
  • Same directions as above, but continue on the trail until you've run 8.5 miles, a little after crossing Robinson Road.

This week we're running through Rock Creek Park in Washington, DC, and you don't want to miss this route! This scenic trail is paved and filled with weekend warriors, and it's guaranteed that everyone will be out this weekend with a high of 61 degrees on Saturday. The half group will run 8 miles and the full group will run 16!

Remember to sign up for carpooling if you need a ride or can provide one. We'll head over to Starbucks & Einstein Bros Bagels in Chevy Chase to refuel after the run.

Meet Up

We'll meet at 8:00 am by the ranger station in Meadowbrook Park. There is some parking along Beach Drive, next to the bridge that crosses the creek. There is also a parking lot inside the park, accessible from Meadowbrook Lane. It is a 50 minute drive from downtown Baltimore, so plan accordingly and make sure you have a road map or navigation system. Be sure to call Sarah if you have any issues getting there.

Route

Half marathon:

Directions:
  • From the start, head east on Rock Creek Trail and find Beach Drive. This road is usually closed to traffic on weekends and will be filled with runners, walkers, and bikers.
  • You will cross Military Road shortly after 3 miles.
  • Continue until you've run 4 miles and head back to the start. There is no good indication on the route for 4 miles, so be sure to stick by someone with a GPS watch if you don't have your own.
Marathon:

Directions:
  • From the start, head east on Rock Creek Trail and find Beach Drive. This road is usually closed to traffic on weekends and will be filled with runners, walkers, and bikers.
  • You will cross Military Road shortly after 3 miles and Broad Branch Road at 5 miles.
  • After crossing Broad Branch Road, continue on Western Ridge Trail on the opposite side of the creek as Beach Drive. You will cross the creek twice at miles 5.4 and 5.7. After the second crossing, you will be on Rock Creek Park Trail. If you encounter Piney Branch Parkway, you went too far.
  • Follow the trail past the zoo on your right.
  • Immediately after the zoo, you will encounter a traffic tunnel. IF POSSIBLE, DO NOT RUN THROUGH THE TUNNEL. Instead follow the path to your right around the hill until it rejoins the road on the other side of the tunnel.
  • Your turnaround is at 8 miles, where the trail passes under Massachusetts Avenue.
